The police union has thrown its support behind tougher rules for ramming police cars.

Neil Mitchell told the state opposition is set to pledge a mandatory two-year sentence for ramming police cars in the wake of another incident overnight.

The incident involving a stolen silver 2006 Nissan Tiida sedan happened in a unit car park on Station Road about 2.30am, leaving the divvy van a write-off.

The Police Association says there has been 117 police car rammings since July.

“It’s an alarming trend,” union secretary Wayne Gatt told Neil Mitchell.

“It has to be stopped.

“Every time it occurs, it puts the lives of our members in danger.”

On the idea of a mandatory two-year sentence: “We would absolutely support that.”
