A 37-year-old man armed with a metal pole and a mop has been caught smashing windows in Carlton overnight.

Police were called to Lygon Street around midnight, with the man refusing to speak to officers.

“He became increasingly aggressive,” Victoria Police First Constable Paul Hogan said on 3AW Breakfast.
