The CEO of Metro Trains has lifted the lid on the incident which has shut two major lines for several days.

The Mernda and Hurstbridge lines won’t be operational until Monday following Sunday night’s train derailment, with the last of the train carriages being removed on Tuesday.

“About 10.30pm on Sunday night as one of our trains was approaching Clifton Hill station…the fifth carriage of that train, the front bogey, lifted off the tracks,” Raymond O’Flaherty told Tom Elliott.

“Now obviously our efforts are to recover the site, to get in there and to get everything reinstated properly so we can get train services back running as soon as possible.
