Tom Elliott has weighed in on the news the federal government are reportedly very close to releasing the permanent migration target, which is expected to stay at 185,000.

The 3AW Mornings host stated this is in “stark contrast” to the last few years, where the average migrant intake was closer to 500,000.

“The stresses that come from rapid population growth are one of the reasons that the March for Australia protest occurred on Sunday,” he said.

“Wherever you look, you name it, we’ve got problems with population growth.

“It is okay to have a debate about the sheer number of migrants that come here.”

Immigration policy analyst, Abul Rizvi, says it’s an “oddity” that the federal government has delayed the migration target for the financial year until September.
