Melbourne’s first pro-Palestine protest of the year went ahead on Sunday, despite calls from the city’s lord mayor and police urging for it to be cancelled as bushfires raged across the state.

Lecturer in criminology at Macquarie University and former NSW police detective, Dr Vincent Hurley, then weighed in on whether a permit system would work in Victoria.

“It’s not only to hold the protesters accountable, it’s also to hold the police accountable,” Dr Hurley told Shane McInnes.
