Boroondara detectives are trying to determine when a thief allegedly broke into a Kew home and stole paintings and jewellery worth more than $400,000.

Victoria Police media advisor Leonie Johnson says the theft was discovered late last year and police believe the home was allegedly targeted several times.

“However, the home had actually been unoccupied for about a year,” she told Ross and Russel.
