Melbourne is set to exceed Sydney’s population and become Australia’s most populated city by 2032.

3AW Mornings host Tom Elliott weighed in on Melbourne’s population growth and asked “is it the prize we want?”

“With a higher population comes problems,” Elliott said.

“Given it’s likely to happen, let’s plan for it.”

Social researcher and demographer at McCrindle research, Mark McCrindle, said there’s been a “consistent trend” with Melbourne growing significantly faster than Sydney for well over a decade.

“It’s a story of Melbourne’s growth and a story of the growth of even regional Victoria as well,” McCrindle said.
