Gender disparity is becoming an issue in Australian universities, as women begin to outnumber men at alarming rates.

The latest reports have revealed that there is a 60/40 per cent difference, with the most worrying aspect being that men are being locked out of the higher-paying job market.

Western Sydney University vice chancellor and president George Williams spoke with 3AW Mornings host Tom Elliott, highlighting it’s not that men are choosing TAFE over university, it’s that they are choosing less-skilled jobs.

“I think partly it’s women are looking at that longer term, and what we know is over the next 10 to 20 years, 90 per cent of all jobs are going to need TAFE or uni,” Williams said.

The cost of HECS debt was cited as a deterring factor, as well as men leaning towards choosing a short-term job over a long-term career.
