JANUARY 30
VENUE: Old style northern suburbs pub, formerly the Gowerville, massive in size with distinctive timber panelling the dominant indoor feature.
Big, quasi L Shaped area with the bistro set out over some area. Seats in excess of 100 at a time. The public bar is traditional with plenty of room to have one. Good looking pub.
Excellent garden bar, neatly set out with plenty of plants/trees providing shade and a fine buffer to the non stop Bell Street traffic heading east.
Best summarised as a good old fashioned northern suburban pub sticking firmly to its roots.
MENU: Generous list of pub favourites. Eight entrees, 10 mains, two steaks, pizza … plus is a pub lunch $20 special.
Meal deals throughout the week, with Happy Hour – 3-6pm offering $11 pints.
Average prices:
Entrees/starters: $16
Mains: $31
Desserts: Not listed on main menus
Surcharges: 10 per cent public holidays
Beer: Carlton, $7/pot
Wine: $14pg
Sunday roast: $30
Wine list doesn’t run to a ‘tick and order’ list, and reputable winemakers are part of the list e.g. Dalwhinnie, Rielingfreak, Shaw and Smith.
Choice of varietals from the fridge or rack. Moments of Clarity, SA, Chardonnay, good @$14pg.
Tab: No
Pokies: No
Jack Ginnivan Steak Index (JGSI): In honour of the wonderful post from Jack, summer 2025, each week the entry level price for steak, non-specials, is presented without comment.
Stolberg. 300g porterhouse, great southern, chips, salad, sauce, $47.
HIGHLIGHT/S:
Starters: Chimichurri prawns, $18. Good size prawns, five in total, in a deep pool of chilli, garlic, w/aioli, have a bang on taste, with a sharp, but not overbearing heat. Well balanced.
Something Different to Eat: Nothing really from left field, but a chickpea, lentil and coriander patty, brioche bun, cheese/tomato, w/chips is unlikely to have graced the menu when trading as the Gowerville!
Good to see plant based foods a stock standard inclusion on menus.
Summary: Popular pub, busy trade on Thursdays, providing a solid offer all round, getting the basics right to running a good pub. Suspect rest of the week trades consistently well.
Nice start to the year.
