With an abundance of large trucks and utes appearing on freeways and main roads, there are call for them to pay up.

Large American utes like Rams and Chevrolets looks like they will become a permanent fixture on our roads, and the damage that they can cause is pushing calls for an increased registration for heavier vehicles.

3AW Afternoons host Tony Moclair spoke with James Ward from Drive.com.au, saying that it is logical for these larger vehicles becoming more popular, we take into account not only what they do to the road, but the risks they pose to vulnerable road users.

Press PLAY to hear why this change would work

“You can drive them anywhere, like it’s just buying a ute, but the concern is that for vulnerable road users, like pedestrians and cyclists, that they’re bigger and heavier, you’re sitting sort of high and further back. So your immediate view for smaller objects like children in front of the car is not always easy,” Ward said.

Incidents involving pedestrians hit their highest rate in over 15 years this past week, with police launching a campaign aiming to protect them from vehicles.
