‘Window dressing’: Why enforcement won’t solve the $7 billion tobacco crisis
The illicit tobacco market in Australia is growing and currently valued at roughly $7 billion.
Experts have said that illegal tobacco is now greater than the combined total spent on cannabis, cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy.
Appearing on 3AW Mornings with Tom Elliott, criminology expert James Martin says “you cannot effectively suppress illicit markets of that size with that level of demand through enforcement alone”.
