The BBL is set to undergo the biggest shake-up in its history, as both Victorian franchises prepare to be rebranded and renamed, potentially in time to launch later this year.

The Stars and Renegades will merge to create a new Cricket Victoria-run team to be based at the MCG, while a second franchise will be sold off to an overseas buyer.

Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins said while the new MCG-based franchise will be launched this season, it was still unclear whether the second franchise will compete as the Melbourne Renegades or be completely rebranded immediately under new ownership.

“The process will move relatively quickly,” he told 3AW’s Eddie Summerfield.

“While I think we’ll know the owner of the new team heading into the new season, that team may or may not decide whether they change the name this season, or next season.

“Ideally, they change the name this season.”
