There are calls for councils to review how cricket pitches are covered at shared sporting grounds, after a local footballer suffered a catastrophic head injury.

27-year-old Nathan Fitzgerald struck his head on the cricket pitch after a collision during a match at Lalor Reserve on Saturday, and has entered end of life care.

Epping Football Club president Luke De Vincentis says councils should work with AFL Victoria and Cricket Victoria to find a safer way to cover pitches during the football season.

Press PLAY to hear him speak on the tragic set of circumstances

“Cricket pitches in the middle of footy ovals has been a risk for a long time,” Mr De Vincentis told Shane McInnes on 3AW Drive.
