Victoria’s Auditor-General’s Office has exposed a secret public transport tax to help pay for the Suburban Rail Loop project, in a report released today.

The reported uncovered a one per cent levy on all public transport fares, which Victorians have been paying since January last year.

“One could say it’s covert taxation, but one might also say that it is borderline corruption,” Jacqui Felgate said.

“You are paying a covert tax that no one told you about.”

State opposition leader Jess Wilson didn’t hold back on her thoughts about the latest revelation, labelling the state Labor government “corrupt”.

“This is a fundamental breach of trust with the Victorian people,” Wilson said on 3AW Drive.
