Southern Grampians Shire Council threatened constituents with a $209 fine for repeatedly putting the wrong items in their bins under a new three-strike policy.

“To put rude stickers and then fines, and in some cases, Southern Grampians Shire is saying they might refuse to collect offenders bins at all, is ridiculous,” he said.

Southern Grampians Shire Mayor Dennis Heslin told Elliott that the initial focus would be on green waste.

“If that load is contaminated, that then has to go to landfill, and the cost of putting it into landfill is greater than if it is a clean load,” he said.
