Reports that motorists are being fooled by unrealistic petrol price comparisons has been rubbished by the Australian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association.

The Federal Government releases monthly reports on world-wide petrol prices, but there are claims the official statistics are misleading.

Mark McKenzie, the CEO of the Australian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association, said he was ‘miffed’ by the reports.

He said the facts were evident on the Office of the Chief Economist website.

‘This story about bogus petrol price reporting is bogus itself,’ he said.

‘The discussion presented in some of the media today is talking about comparing the pre tax price which we actually argue and in fact any comparison done around the world, looks at the price paid at the pump.

‘People can’t buy fuel without paying the tax.

‘I’m a bit miffed at this story in that the information has been out there for a long time.’

He said Australia is the fourth cheapest for petrol, and the third lowest on diesel behind the US, Canada and Mexico.
