Plastic bags used at supermarkets will be banned by the Andrews Government.

The State Government will unveil full details of the plan later today.

Shoppers in Australia churn through around six billion disposable bags a year.

While there’s no date on when the policy will be brought in, it’s understood it can be introduced without legislation.

Deputy Leader of the Victorian Greens, Nina Springle, said it’s a no-brainer, and there’s a huge “plastic pollution crisis” in Australia.

“We have lagged behind the rest of the country on this one, this announcement overnight is very welcome,” she told Ross and John.

“The devil is in the detail we haven’t seen exactly what’s going to be in the legislation.”

Victoria is one of the last states to enact legislation to limit the spread of the plastic bags.

South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and Northern Territory already have bans in place, while the ban will take effect in Queensland and Western Australia next year.
