The soothing power of music is being explored in the birthing suite.

A doctor at the Northern Hospital has put together a playlist for mothers to be to choose from while they are in labour.

‘Birth Beats by Dr Sush’ is the brainchild of Dr Sushen Naidoo.

And the idea is simple – music is medicine.

“The song that was at the centre of that story was Signed, Sealed, Delivered which worked really well for that family, so that was excellent,” he told Neil Mitchell.

He said the idea was to choose songs appropriate for women in labour, songs that sound good, allude to birth, parenting or babies.

The playlist now has 150 songs.

“I started putting these songs together myself and when I started playing them for people having a baby, the response was amazingly positive,” he said.

“It’s not a new idea, (but) this particular set of songs have been curated really well so the songs sound really good.

“People were having a really emotional response to the song as their baby was born.”

Songs include:

  • Tears for Fears – Shout
  • Your Song – Elton John
  • Cosmic Dancer – T.Rex
  • Somewhere over the Rainbow
  • Born this Way – Lady GaGa
  • Day in the Life – The Beatles
