Police are urging the public to take extreme care before stepping into a public disturbance.

A 3AW listener, Sarah, called Tom Elliott on Wednesday after a harrowing road-rage incident.

Sarah was shaken by the incident, but also upset that no one intervened to help.

This prompted Tom to ask police what they advise.

Senior Sergeant Doug Bowles said it’s a complex issue.

“People need to be mindful of making a situation worse,” Mr Bowles said on Thursday.

“If your safety would be at risk, I would have to say absolutely do not get involved.”

Mr Bowles said calling Triple Zero should always be the first port of call.
