A 17-year-old Gippsland boy has been recognised as a Community Hero for his efforts to save his father’s life at their Mirboo North farm earlier this year.

Paul Mancarella and his son Douglas were moving sheep into a shearing shed when the father-of-three suddenly collapsed.

Realising his dad had stopped breathing, Douglas worked quickly to lay Paul on his back, call Triple Zero and begin CPR.

Douglas listened to some of the call with Neil Mitchell on 3AW Mornings, and said re-living the experience made him feel a “bit nervous”.

“It makes me remember what I’ve done and how important it is for country people to learn CPR,” Douglas said.

Mark was inside the house when he saw paramedics arriving.

“I seen them coming up the track and thought, ‘Oh jeez something serious must have happened’,” he said.

Mirboo North paramedic Mark Cooke nominated Douglas for a Community Hero Award for his quick response and maturity in what would have been a frightening situation.

Paul, pictured above with Douglas and Mark, has since recovered.
