Almost one in three Victorians engage in risky behaviour on our roads, with an alarming number of pedestrians taking shortcuts across tram tracks or walking through rail crossings while on the phone, new research shows.

The study was conducted by Public Transport Victoria.

Ben Rossiter, executive officer of Victoria Walks, said a lot of the problems were caused by poor conditions, such as packed tram stops and poor traffic light sequences.

“It’s just ridiculous,” he told Ross and John.

“We’re faced with some pretty big decisions because 90 per cent in the CBD get around on foot.

“We need to look at how they can get on and off tram stops and train stations and we’re not doing it very well.”
