A new French study which found people who eat a lot of organic food had a reduced risk of developing two different types of cancers has been met with criticism by some experts.

The study of 70,000 people were involved in the study, which found those who ate the most organic foods were less likely to develop lymphoma and postmenopausal breast cancer.

Professor Jennie Brand-Miller from the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at University of Sydney told 3AW Breakfast the quality of food in Australia is very high.

“This particular study came from France and they did find there were links between people who bought organic food and being higher income, and higher educated and also a lot more health conscious behaviours such as physical activity, buying more fruit and vegetables and eating less meat,” he said.

“The real message from the research I have read, in Australia we have a very wonderful food supply, at a reasonable price, it doesn’t need to be organic, you don’t need to pay 50 per cent more for your broccoli, because the quality of the ordinary food is so high.”

Ross: I doubt I’m the first person to say this, isn’t it possible that people who go to the trouble of eating organic food, generally speaking take better care of themselves in all respects?

Professor Brand-Miller: Exactly right.
