Tolls are rising for Melbourne’s new tunnel — even though it’s not built

The Andrews Government is defending the deal for the West Gate tunnel after it was revealed the tolls are already rising, and it isn’t even built yet.

The original agreement in 2015 was for a peak hour charge of $4.40.

That’s rising 4.25 per cent every year until 2029.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Jacinta Allan, says they’ve been “transparent about the approach for tolling from the beginning.”

“This approach has been known for quite some time and, in fact, the Liberal party also supported the West Gate Tunnel and this approach,” Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said.
