Victoria is headed for a cold snap this week, with the maximum temperature in Melbourne forecast to plummet to the lowest recorded in April since 1996.

The mercury is expected to rise to a top of just 13° in Melbourne on Thursday and Friday.

Bureau of Meterology senior forecaster Michael Efron said Melburnians will certainly feel the chill.

“It will feel a lot colder with those strong south-westerly winds. Some hail and thunder as well,” he told 3AW’s Dee Dee.

Snow is set to fall in the Grampians as the snow level lowers to 1000 metres on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Melbourne has had one of its wettest starts to the year on record.

Currently, 2020 rainfall in the city is just 0.6mm behind the entire 2019 rainfall total.

April’s rainfall figure is already twice the monthly average at 111 millimetres.
