A local police officer has saved the lives of a mother, father and infant from flood waters in Tasmania.

Constable Dabner from Latrobe has been hailed a hero.

He was called in to work early Monday morning due to flash floods across northern Tasmania.

Neil Mitchell spoke with Constable Peter Dabner on Wednesday.

‘I wasn’t long into my shift when I received a call in regards to a couple of people and a baby trapped in a vehicle,’ he said.

When Peter arrived he found a man and a woman and as well as a 3 month old baby trapped in a car.

‘I found the vehicle relatively quickly, there was another car further up the road that had washed down into a paddock,’ he said on 3AW Mornings.

‘The water was coming up pretty quick, I was concerned that the police vehicle was going to start moving.’

The family are all fine now.

‘Thankfully, the sun is shining.’
