A Kiwi’s view on why Jacinda Ardern really resigned
Jacinda Ardern yesterday announced she will resign as New Zealand’s Prime Minister, and a Kiwi journalist has shared his view on why.
Announcing she wouldn’t be seeking re-election, Ms Ardern said “I know what this job takes, and I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice”.
But Kiwi journalist Patrick Gower thinks there’s another reason behind her decision.

“She’s probably been one of our most popular prime ministers historically but at the moment her popularity has been plummeting. In fact there are high levels of toxicity towards her here in New Zealand,” he told Neil Mitchell.
“In order to preserve her own legacy, as you’ve just talked about, internationally, she wouldn’t want to have a loss on her record. That wouldn’t look so flash when you’re trying to get on the big media shows in the northern hemisphere.”
