A new freeway promising to cut travel times from the CBD to the Mornington Peninsula by 10 minutes has just opened.

The Mordialloc Freeway, a nine kilometre stretch of road which links the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at Springvale Road with the Dingley Bypass, opened yesterday.

Construction of the project began in 2019.

Program Director of the Mordialloc Freeway Project, Brendan Pauwels, says the road was completed a month early.

“A lot of planning was done in the ’50s and ’60s to set aside land for future roads, and this has been set aside since 1954,” he told Ross and Russel.

“It’s always been earmarked that there would be an extension of the Mornington Peninsula freeway and we’ve finally got around to building it.”
