Tom Elliott got a bit of a shock when heading home from work on Wednesday night.

He came across two young men on the side of the road, attempting to change a wheel and tyre on a car.

It was clear they weren’t sure what they were doing, so Tom went in to help.

It was the first time the men had needed to do it.

Geoff Gwilym, CEO of the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce, said they wouldn’t be alone.

“I think it’s a real shame that we’ve arrived where we have,” he said.

Mr Gwilym said young people, in general, simply weren’t taught or exposed to the basics of changing wheels and tyres while growing up and it shouldn’t be a surprise many don’t know how.

And it should be of concern.

“It’s dangerous to jack a car up and change the wheel if you don’t know what you’re doing,” he said.
