Those with “real” Christmas trees are being warned to keep the bottom of it moist over the next few weeks to ensure it doesn’t become a fire hazard.

Joe rang 3AW Afternoons on Tuesday, telling listeners a dry tree was at risk of bursting into flames with lights wrapped around it.

Commander Paul Horton, from Fire Rescue Victoria, said Joe was pretty much on the money.

“That is a very real threat,” he said on 3AW Afternoons.

“We do encourage people to keep the base of the trees moist.

“Most tree these days will sit in some form of bowl, with some supports.

“Just keep the bottom of the bowl moist and the tree will do the rest.”
