More than 2.5 million Australians are experiencing tattoo regret, according to new research from McCrindle.

One-in-three Australians have at least one tattoo, and the new research has revealed that almost a third of them regret getting inked.

Bianca Sibraa, dermal clinician at Fresh Skin Canvas in Northcote, told 3AW Breakfast that demand for tattoo removal procedures is greater than ever.

Ms Sibraa said people choose to have their tattoos removed for many reasons: because of the nature of the tattoo, its positioning, because they’ve outgrown it, or because they need the tattoo to be removed for work.

“We get people of all ages, from all walks of life,” she said.

The growing popularity of tattoo removal procedures comes down to increased accessibility, with tattoo removal now far easier and cheaper than it was in the past.

“People can get their tattoos removed for as little as $80 to $90…it can take anywhere between 4 and 10 sessions,” Ms Sibraa said.

Quarters shared his three golden rules for minimising the risk of tattoo regret:

  1. Never get one when you’re drunk
  2. Never get the name of a lover
  3. Don’t let your friend loose with a tattoo gun.

Ms Sibraa agreed with Quarters advice, citing drunken tattoos done in Bali as one of the most common kinds of tattoos she is asked to remove.
