One Melbourne council has been urged to re-focus their priorities after they launched a speed dating event themed around garbage collection.

Hobsons Bay Council’s ‘rubbish dating’ initiative is encouraging people to meet each other, while also picking up rubbish at the same time.

But Council Watch’s Dean Hurlston isn’t a fan, saying councils need to focus on serving the needs of their community, rather than putting on events outside of their remit.

“People just want them to do the job,” he told Jacqui Felgate on 3AW Drive.

“They can’t answer the phone to fix your pot hole, but they can raise a flag for Palestine, they can pass motions, they can kick people out houses and now they think they’re some sort of dating expert out of the rubbish.”
