‘Absolute positive’: Will other sports follow bold athletics plan to financially reward Olympic medalists?
Former Olympian Tamsyn Manou has welcomed World Athletics’ plan to financially reward gold medal-winning track and field athletes in Paris.
Each gold medalist in the 48 track and field events will received $50,000 USD from the governing body of sport, breaking with over a century’s worth of tradition to not offer financial rewards at the Olympics.
The bold announcement – which came earlier this year ahead of the Paris Games – could mean other sports follow suit in the future.

Shane McInnes told The Olympics Today it was a good thing to financially reward gold medalists.
“I think (it) is an absolute positive,” he said on The Olympics Today podcast.
“And you would have to think that World Aquatics would be thinking the exact same thing (about doing similar in the future).”
