Ad refusing heterosexual people would be illegal here, says Rights Commissioner
A tenancy ad in New Zealand has caught Tom Elliott’s attention.
A couple wants to rent out a room, and would like the new tenant to be a vegan. They want people who are not racist, sexist, or homophobic.
But they also don’t want anyone who is heterosexual.
Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson told Tom that ad could not be run in Victoria.
‘That would be discrimination against somebody on the basis of their sexual orientation,’ Mr Wilson said.
‘It raises an interesting question: in people’s own private homes, should they be able to decide who enters, and the terms and conditions they do?’
