Adam Bandt backs push to slash controversial ATM fees
The Greens want ATM fees slashed.
Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt told Tom Elliott banks had every right to ensure they didn’t make a loss processing a transaction, but that should be where it started and ended.
‘Don’t let them make a profit out of it,’ he said on 3AW Drive.
‘As a matter of principle, we believe people shouldn’t be charged for the privilege of accessing their own money.’
But so far, the idea has been rejected by parliament.
‘We’re disappointed Labor and Liberal voted against it,’ Mr Bandt said.
However, he did praise the government for legislation which passed on Thursday relating to cuts in fees for credit card transactions.
‘Today the government did something good,’ he said.
‘You won’t hear me say that very often, so mark it down.’
Meanwhile, Mr Bandt also backed a controversial push from the City of Yarra to introduce 30km/h speed zones.
