Aerial water bombing is underway at Maribrynong where a fire is burning at a disused Defence Department building.

The fire began in nearby grass land and quickly spread to nearby buildings off Cordite Road.

MFB Incident controller Marty Braid told Tom Elliott firefighters have been slowed down by restricted access to water, meaning water bomber ‘Elvis’ had to be called in.

“We’ve got limited water supply in the area and a fast moving grass fire,” Marty said.

“The building is still on fire, we’ve got a little way to go until we can say the fire is under control.”

Maribyrnong Rd remains closed as it is fire crews only available access route to water supply.

The cause is still unknown.
