AFL advice is to ‘be discreet’
Advice from the AFL to clubs dealing with contracted players from opposition clubs is simple, ‘be discreet’.
AFL Operations Manager Mark Evans accepts that conversations do happen between players and other clubs, but would prefer it be done behind closed doors and not in the public eye.
‘I don’t think it’s helpful to either club or the player, or the code,’ Evans told Sports Today.
‘If that’s what you think, there must be a meeting… Then I think you need to go to every length to try and keep that as discrete as possible.’
Evans ‘does not see the sense’ in changing the format and making it completely transparent to the public.
As it stands, contracted players are off limits for opposition clubs to offer a formal contract to, however the initial conversations can take place.
