AFL boss Gillon McLachlan admits he couldn’t ‘look fans in the eye’ and say this year’s grand final would be better at night.

The league has confirmed the biggest match of the season will again start at 2.30pm this season.

It had been widely expected the match would be moved to a twilight timeslot.

Speaking with Neil Mitchell, McLachlan said the match would only be moved if the plan to do so was ‘bulletproof.’

‘I couldn’t look the fans in the eye this year and say that,’ the league chief executive confessed on 3AW.

However, he quickly reminded fans a time change was ‘inevitable.’

‘At some point it  will be tried,’ McLachlan said.
