AFL Women’s Grand Final venue to be confirmed
It has been confirmed that the AFL Women’s Grand Final will be played in round one of the AFL season.
The idea is to play the match as a curtain raiser to a round one clash, however the league may face logistical problems.
The AFL has allowed space for a day Grand Final for the AFL Women’s League, given there is not an AFL match until 4:35pm. The match scheduled in the twilight timeslot is at Etihad Stadium, to be played between St Kilda and Melbourne.
However 3AW Sports Today host Dwayne Russell says the AFL Women’s Grand Final should be played at the MCG.
‘You wouldn’t let them play their Grand Final somewhere other than the home of footy, would you?’ He said.
AFL General Manager of Clubs and Operations Travis Auld said the league is yet to confirm the venue for the Grand Final.
‘What we can do is have a day game, maybe at the MCG or maybe somewhere else,’ Auld told Sports Today.
Essendon and Hawthorn are scheduled to play on Saturday night of round one, however a Women’s League curtain raiser would result in a clash with other AFL matches in the same timeslot.
Sydney and Port Adelaide is the other round one twilight match on the Saturday afternoon.
