Airport bars in the firing line as drunk and disorderly passengers cause havoc

Airport bars are in the firing line as drunk and disorderly passengers cause havoc on flights.

There were almost 11,000 unruly passenger incidents reported last year, one quarter of which were linked to intoxication.

Geoff Munro of the Alcohol and Drug Foundation told Ross and John he’s surprised that airlines aren’t more vigilant.

‘We’ve seen aircraft turn around several times and that must be very costly,’ Mr Munro said.

Mr Munro said airport bars are subject to normal alcohol-serving regulation, and they need to be held to it.

‘They need to serve responsibly, and it’s clear that some of them don’t,’ he said.

‘We need to make sure they are doing the right thing, and I think airlines need to do a better job in making sure people aren’t intoxicated when getting on board.’
