Flood waters in Victoria’s north east appear to have peaked and begun to recede.

Scott Williams from the weather bureau says the Ovens River peaked on Wednesday night at around the major flood level.

‘The warning will be reassessed during the morning and there will be an update,’ he explained.

‘It’s certainly not got worse overnight, if anything it’s just beginning to turn a corner.’

A relief centre remains open at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, with some farms cut off by flood water.

A number of roads remain closed.

The Murray River has also flooded on the border at Albury-Wodonga.
