All elective surgery at both public and private hospitals will be allowed to resume by the end of the month.

From February 21, public hospitals in metropolitan Melbourne can perform Category 2 surgeries and private hospitals in Melbourne can undertake up to 75 per cent of any elective surgery activity, up from a 50 per cent cap.

In regional Victoria, the cap of private hospitals will increase from 75 per cent to 100 per cent on February 21. Regional public hospitals can continue to deliver any elective surgery based on their individual capacity.

Health Minister Martin Foley says it’s hoped all surgery can resume from February 28.

Each hospital will be responsible for assessing its capacity based on staffing and COVID-19 demands.
