An American diplomat who spoke with Tony Abbott about the Middle East this week says it ‘makes sense’ for Australia to join the fight against Islamic State.

The federal government confirmed today it would be sending planes to bomb Syria.

Elliott Abrams, who served under US Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W Bush, told Tom Elliott it was the right thing to do.

‘It does make sense,’ he said on 3AW Drive.

The American also shared his thoughts on why ‘public opinion’ had changed about the fight in his home country and how it soon could in Australia, too.
