A specialist physician has explained why calf injuries are so devastating after Matilda’s captain Sam Kerr sat out of last night’s win against Ireland in the FIFA World Cup due to a calf injury.

Dr Peter Larkin says calf injuries can be more common in older athletes.

“In the athletes over thirty … it’s far more common to tear a calf muscle because it is a dynamic muscle when you go up on your toes, you’re pushing off, whether you’re running across the street or jumping off a tram, they’re really significant in terms of time to recover, often longer than a hamstring,” he told Ross and Russel.
