Duck shooting could be completely banned just weeks ahead of the 2023 season.

Andy Meddick from the Animal Justice Party says the practice is “cruel”, game species numbers are in “serious decline”, and native birds are shot and maimed every duck shooting season.

“The surveys we’ve conducted every year have shown at least over the last decade that the game species of birds which are shot have been in serious decline and the breeding numbers have not kept pace with how many are being shot,” he told Ross and Russel.

New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia banned recreational duck shooting more than three decades ago.

“At this point in time South Australia and Victoria are really only the outliers on duck shooting,” Mr Meddick said.
