The Andrews government has reportedly ordered a security sweep of its ministerial cars in a move described by parliamentary sources as “highly unusual”.

The Herald Sun reports drivers were directed to present their vehicles for inspection this week.

The Premier’s department is playing down the reports.

Lawyer Justin Lawrence says there are very tight laws surrounding “bugging”.

“It’s quite tight in Victoria about what you can and can’t do when it comes to listening devices. Listening devices, interestingly enough, includes CCTV,” he told Ross and Russel.

“Using anything that you obtain from a listening device is illegal without a police warrant, and actually installing it in the first place is illegal without a police warrant.”
