The Andrews government is under fire for draft regulations which could see walkers fined up to $924 for straying from trails, and swimmers could be banned from some waterways without a permit.

The new rules, which affect more than 50 parks across metropolitan and regional Victoria, have been outlined in the proposed Metropolitan and Regional Parks Regulations.

Under the rules, anyone who interferes with “wildlife, soil, rocks, vegetation or visitors” could also be fined $1472.

Opposition environment spokesperson James Newbury says the proposed regulations are “just loopy”.

“Imagine walking off the path at Albert Park and getting a fine for it!,” he said.
