Another government MP might be a dual citizen.

Fairfax Media is reporting the member for Bennelong, John Alexander, might be a UK citizen.

Mr Alexander’s father was born in the UK.

A spokesperson for Mr Alexander said he believes his father renounced that citizenship.

As a lower-house member, a finding that Mr Alexander is a dual citizen would trigger a by-election that would put further strain on the government’s majority.

Liberal Senator Eric Abetz was talking to Tom Elliott when the story broke.

Mr Abetz said the Prime Minister’s plan to tackle the scandal is appropriate.

“Short-term politics has to give way to the long-term confidence Australian people can have in their parliament,” Mr Abetz said.
