ANZAC DAY: Essendon v Collingwood at the MCG | 3AW Radio

Sportsday

Daniel Wells spoke to 3AW after his Collingwood debut.

He said the Pies have been working on being more efficient with their ball use inside 50.

‘Sometimes, keeping it simple when kicking to the top of the square, where our big forwards can have a run at it, is probably the best option,’ he said.

‘It’s not as easy as it sounds.’

Essendon veteran Jobe Watson spoke to 3AW in the rooms.

He said he used to live with breakout star Orazio Fantasia.

‘He used to sit in the back garden with some olive oil rubbed on his skin, tanning. Maybe that’s his trick,’ Watson said.

‘He works incredibly hard.

‘When he first arrived at the club, I think he was 55kg or something like that.

‘It’s a testament to someone who can work like that and turn into the player he is.’

FULL TIME

Essendon has run out 18-point winners over the old enemy in front of over 87,000 fans.

Joe Daniher was awarded the Anzac Medal for his three telling goals.

Tony Shaw said the Bombers just had more quality on the field.

‘They just had that edge on them,’ he said.

‘Watson’s last quarter showed good leadership. Heppell’s a really good leader, too.’

HALF TIME

Essendon leads by three points at the main break.

The Pies ran out the half strongly, but couldn’t take the lead after kicking a string of five straight behinds.

Tony Shaw said Steele Sidebottom and Zach Merrett have been the best afield for their respective sides so far.

Essendon Chairman Lindsay Tanner joined 3AW outside the ground in the lead-up to the game.

He defended the decision to raise the prices for this year’s Anzac Day game.

‘The system is designed to encourage people to book early and become members,’ Tanner said.

‘That means there are plenty of opportunities for people who want to get the best value for money to do so.

‘Compared with other things, AFL football is still pretty good value for money.’

Anzac Day at the G is one of the most anticipated matches of the year.

The Bombers and the Pies will honour Australia’s service men and women ahead of their traditional clash.

By their own coach’s admission, several of the Dons ‘hit a wall’ last week.

They’ll be out to show they can fight to the final siren today.

Collingwood need to show their fans they can kick a score.

The Pies rank 6th for inside 50s per game, but 17th for goals per game.

It’ll up to the likes of Moore, Elliott, Fasolo, Cox, and Hoskin-Elliott to prove the potency of the Magpie attack.

Who will walk away with four invaluable points today?
