Neil Mitchell has clashed with an academic over whether competitiveness is a good thing for children.

It comes following the state opposition’s plan to introduce compulsory competitive sport for year 7 students if it wins the upcoming election.

Dr David Zinger from Monash University expressed his concern over the plan.

Neil Mitchell then suggested to Dr Zinger it was a good thing for children to get used to competitiveness, given it was a competitive world once they left school.

“Are you kidding!?” was his response.

A fiery debate ensued.
