Athletes accommodation for Rio Olympics deemed ‘unliveable’
Athletes accommodation for the 2016 Rio Olympics has been deemed ‘unliveable’.
The Australian Olympic Committee has been forced to work out of a hotel, while athletes who will begin arriving in Rio from today, will be moved into alternative accommodation.
Ross and John spoke with Australian Chef de Mission, Kitty Chiller.
‘It was clear when we walked in that the building wasn’t ready for inhabitation.’
Blocked toilets, leaking pipes and lack of electricity are among the problems preventing Australia and other nations from taking up residence in the village.
Kitty says a plumbing stress test was performed yesterday, which failed.
‘Water was coming out of light fittings and short circuiting lights.’ – she told 3AW Breakfast.
‘I’m hoping by this time tomorrow we’ve really broken the back of it.’
Ross also asked Kitty if she had heard about the recent ‘kidnapping’ of a New Zealand athlete in Rio.
‘Right – I hadn’t heard that…’
‘The security presence in and around the village is strong.’ – she told Ross.
